Wisconsin Snowmobile Fatality Summary

12-26-01 Dorothy Lake, Oneida County. 30 year old male. BAC was 0.148.
The victim had been at a tavern drinking on the evening of the 26th and had returned home in a truck. The victim reportedly called a friend and told him he was going to go to Lake Tomahawk by snowmobile for a drink. The victim was not heard from for 2 days and was reported missing on the 29th. The victim was located under the ice of dorothy Lake on 12-31-01 at around 1pm.

01-01-02 Reservoir Pond, Oconto County. 74 year old male. BAC was unknown.
The victim was observed by two fisherman traveling across Reservoir Pond on a snowmobile when he struck an area of thin ice. The victim then tried to accelerate out, but the snowmobile broke through the ice in about 5 to 10 ft. of water. The two fisherman were successful in getting the victim out of water by paddling an inner-tube to victim and grabbing him. The two rescuers started CPR. The victim was then transported to Langlade Memorial Hospital and then air lifted to Wausau where he died.

01-19-02 Town of Boulder, Vilas County. 32 year old male. BAC was 0.17.
The victim was 4th in a line of 5 snowmobilers traveling on a road. The road is unmaintained and part of the trail system. The snowmobilers were going downhill into a minimal "S" curve, when the victim lost control on the second curve and crashed into some trees immediately off of the road. The victim died at the scene. Alcohol is suspected to be a factor. The companions estimated speeds of 35 mph, however the investigation indicates higher speeds were involved.

01-19-02 Town of Tomahawk, Lincoln County. 49 year old female. BAC was .00.
A male snowmobile operator and female passenger were southbound on the Hiawatha Trail coming into the north side of the City of Tomahawk. The operator failed to negotiate a curve and continued straight onto a section of railroad. The snowmobile stopped upon striking a railroad tie, which was cabled across the rails. Both the operator and passenger were ejected off the snowmobile. The operator was wearing a helmet and sustained minor injuries. The female passenger struck her head on the railroad tie and sustained massive head injuries, resulting in her death.

1-20-02 Town of New, Brown County. 29 year old male. BAC was 0.0.
A snowmobile operated by the victim was traveling west bound in a snow covered field. Another snowmobile (#2) was traveling east bound in the same field. The two snowmobiles collided head on near the crest of a hill. The #2 snowmobile continued over the top of the victim's snowmobile striking the victim. The victim was thrown from the snowmobile and may have been dragged by snowmobile #2. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim from snowmobile #2 was taken to the hospital for a cut to the head and possible broken wrist.

1-31-02 Town of Dekorra, Columbia County. 40 year old male. BAC was 0.103.
The victim left a bar and traveled several hundred yards out onto Lake Wisconsin. The victim then drove towards shore and collided with the uneven shoreline. The machine struck a flagpole. Subject was ejected and struck a large tree that was near shore.

2-02-02 City of Fond Du Lac, Lake Winnebago, Fond Du Lac County. 55 year old female. BAC was .21
A male and female were snowmobiling on Lake Winnebago and started at approximately 3:30pm that day. The two snowmobilers had stopped for dinner and drinks at a local business. Both were operating their own snowmobiles on the lake at approximately 8:20pm. The male was in the lead with the female following. The male skipped across open water and when he looked back, he saw that the female did not make it across. The male returned to the female and tried to rescue her, but he was unable to get her out of the water. He estimated he held onto her about one hour. The male left the area for help. The female was recovered at approximately 1:40am on 2-03-02 by a rescue team using a hover craft and was pronounced dead at 3:45am.

2-10-02 City of Wausau, Lake Wausau, Marathon County. 40 year old male. BAC was 0.261
The victim and a companion spent the afternoon and evening snowmobiling on the ice to local taverns using one snowmobile. The victim-operator and a passenger left a tavern with intention on traveling to another tavern. The victim apparently became disoriented and headed into the main stream area of the WI River near the sewage treatment area discharge. The snowmobile broke through thin ice. The female companion was able to grab the ice until she was rescued. The victim submerged below the surface before a rescue could be made. The victim's body was recovered on 2-11-02 by the Marathon Sheriff's dive team The investigation indicates the victim was intoxicated and became disoriented.

2-16-02 Town of Lac du Flambeau, Vilas County. 44 year old male. BAC was 0.330.
The victim was part of a two-party snowmobile group operating on a marked area across Fence Lake. The victim-operator missed a curve, went off the trail and hit the shore embankment of the lake. The snowmobile was launched into the air. The victim hit a large pine tree and was killed instantly. The snowmobile continued and hit the roof of a cabin and broke several trees. Speed was estimated at 60-70 mph.

2-10-02 Town of Hiles, Forest County. 42 year old man. BAC was unknown.
The incident occurred on 2-10-02 but the victim died 2-27-02. Wardens were not immediately made aware of the incident until after 2-27-02 and the incident is still under investigation. Basic information is that the victim was operating on Four Duck Lane with about 7-8 other snowmobilers. It is believed the victim was the last rider and that he went off the road becoming seriously injured during impact with trees. The victim died 17n days later of injuries sustained in the incident.

3-01-02 Town of Three Lakes, Oneida County. 14 year old male. BAC was unknown.
the victim was operating a snowmobile on a non-funded snowmobile trail. The victim failed to stop the snowmobile while crossing state highway 45. The victim was struck by a vehicle that was traveling south on state highway 45. The victim died 3-2-02 from injuries sustained in the incident.

3-7-02 Town of Spirit, Price County. 40 year old male. BAC was 0.0
The victim was the 2nd snowmobiler in a group of three that were traveling on a public snowmobile trail through a wooded area. The group came upon an active logging operation just as a large maple tree was felled. The tree started to fall across the trail when the first snowmobiler had just passed the spot. The victim attempted to brake and take evasive maneuvers, sliding sideways in the trail. The victim was struck in the shoulder area by the falling tree. The victim was knocked off the snowmobile and the tree landed on the victim's head killing him instantly. The third snowmobiler was able to stop prior to hitting the downed tree.

3-7-02 Town of Boulder, Vilas County. 24 year old male. BAC was 0.0
The victim was 3rd in a group of three snowmobilers traveling on a road, which is unplowed and part of the snowmobile trail system. The victim was operating a newly acquired snowmobile. The incident was not witnessed, however the investigation indicates that the victim apparently became distracted, drifted to the right and went off the trail. After leaving the trail, the machine and victim struck a small stump. The machine then hit a second stump and eventually became airborne after impacting a log on the ground. The snowmobile struck several trees while airborne. The victim also became airborne. The victim impacted a tree with his head and succumbed to his injuries.

3-8-02 Town of Jackson, Burnett County. 42 year old male. BAC was 0.184.
At approximately 12:30am, the victim was observed leaving a tavern in Webster, WI via snowmobile. When morning arrived it was discovered the victim had failed to return home during the night. The victim's body was discovered at approximately 9:00am the morning of 3-8-02. Investigation indicated the victim had been traveling south on a snowmobile trail that traversed a lake. The victim strayed off the trail to the left and went into some trees. The victim was killed due to apparent head injuries.

3-23-02 Town of Morse, Ashland County. 29 year old male. BAC was listed as "trace"
The victim operator was overdue. A search by other members of his group found him crashed in the woods along a road. The victim was initially treated in the Ashland hospital and trasferred to a Duluth Hospital. It was reported on April 3, 2002 that the victim died March 30, 2002 as a result of his injuries sustained from the crash.
